Volcano Vesuvius excursion – September 28

The excursion to Mount Vesuvius will depart at 9.30 am from Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotel, by a dedicated touristic bus.

You will arrive after about 1 hour in the town of Ercolano, where the entrance to the path that leads to the crater is located, and where the group will meet the volcanological guides.

The guides will lead the group through the magical natural paths of the Vesuvius and, once arrived at the top of the crater, they will provide many interesting details on the characteristics of the volcano, its history and the eruptions that have made it famous and very feared.

During the climb, at every step you can admire the majesty of the place: the natural terrace of the old crater Mount Somma, the “sculptures” caused by the eruption of 1944, the Gulf of Naples and the wonders of a panorama, which is unique in the world.

Continuing the climb, you can walk along the Volcano rim to gain a 360° panorama of the Campania islands, the Pompeii and Herculaneum excavations and the Molise-Abruzzo Apennines.

Reaching the summit you can see various fumaroles, constantly monitored by the Vesuvius Observatory, the oldest volcanological observatory in the world, founded by the king of the Two Sicilies Ferdinando II of Bourbon.

The length of the entire path is almost 4km, the difference in altitude is about 200 m, the average slope is 14% and the maximum altitude reached is 1,180 m above sea level.

The first part (about 1km) is all uphill, then we will continue the walk (with no greater difference in height) along the crater rim to enjoy the view, until you decide to go back in the opposite direction.

The temperature at the top of the volcano is generally lower than at its slopes and the wind or rain can unexpectedly affect the crater area.

With regard to clothing, it is a good idea to keep in mind the “onion principle” (more relatively thin and light garments worn on each other). Sneakers or trekking shoes are recommended (the ground is very slippery), binoculars, hat, water and a rain cape. During summer, it can be very hot.

The visit will last about 120 minutes, but obviously, like any trekking route, the timing depends on the pace, the attention paid to the naturalistic details and how long the group will want to stop at the summit.

Because of the ascent on foot and the altitude, the excursion is not recommended for cardiac subjects and for people with respiratory problems, as well as for people with walking problems.

At the end of the excursion we will return back to the Hilton Sorrento Palace Hotel, by a dedicated touristic bus.

Cost of the excursion: € 30.00

The cost includes:

  • Bus travel to/form the Volcano

  • The admission ticket, which includes: insurance coverage, first aid assistance in case of need, explanation on the history and volcanology of Vesuvius by the Vulcanological Guides of the Vesuvius Permanent Presidium
